SMP, dual core, quad core multi cpu support?

Hi I am just curious how well the various versions of MySQL take advantage of multi core CPUs on Linux, specifically Centos 5.

I am considering a 2.33Ghz Conroe class dual core or a 1.6ghz quad core Clovertown cpu. There is a speed advantage on the 1st one, but two extra cores on the second..

Also curious about PHP as well.

Opinions? What about MySQL 4 vs 5 (and PHP4 vs 5)

Again this is on Linux.

Thanks!
