can't run mysql on 512k with php eats too much memory

hey all i'm new to this. i have:
Centos 6
mysql / php / nginx

on a dedicated server that i'm learning on.

when i start nginx and mysqld memory usage bumps a tad bit, but when I connect to my one and only wordpress site, the memory explodes putting my server at 100 - 125% memory use.

can you direct me on what to read to learn how to bring this down, if it is at all possible?

I had to upgrade my server to 1 gig, and it's sitting at 50% plus. mind you before installing this wordpress my site states where under 5% usage.

The wordpress itself can't affect memory right, it's only php, or can this be the cause too
