Showing invisible characters in cells (like paragraphs etc.)

I had a problem driving me mad for nearly half a day, before I recognized that in some cells of my mySQL table there were obviously some invisible characters stored. When I observed the content of the table in phpMyAdmin and some other scripts I saw only the visible characters but still the invisible ones disturbed my php program. Still I do not know what was exactly stored in those cells.
Is there an easy way to make the "real" content of a mysql cell visible?
