unable to connect to remote host on OSX, windows works fine

My OS X Mavericks client is unable to connect to a remote SQL host. All my other 3 Windows clients are able to connect to the remote host. I tried with the same credentials on all 4 clients.
I am using mysql-connector-java 5.1.26 through the Python IDE Pycharm. The error is caused by "java.net.UnknownHostException: "
Yet, the OS X client is able to access the shared files on the remote host via file sharing protocol.
Anybody has encountered this before?
