Make Federated Supported

I am brand new to the DBA side of stuff here.
I have installed MySQL 5.6 and use Workbench.
I am trying to create tables on my local instance from the corporate server/datawarehouse.
My understanding is that I can use Federated Tables
When I run Show Engines, it says NO to Federated being supported.
How do I change this?
I saw one answer on a google search, but I cannot find my INI or MY.CNF files to added the federated line.
