Enable storage engine

Hi

'Show engines;' query shows what are the engines available and our system mysql support this storage engine or not. Can we enable the storage engine which was not supported? I am using linux cent OS operating system mysql version 5.0.45. I wish to enable "federated engine". Can anyone help me to give the steps to enable?
