Boolean search sorting

Hello there,

I've done a bit of reading to optimize my FT search.
I understand that the Boolean search does NOT have any sorting rules by default, and that SORT BY DATE is a performance killer (which, sadly, is really what i need to sort my results by).
If I don't set any sorting rules, is it just random ? There surely must be some logic in the way results are returned...

Thank you for your help
