Server installn problem on Win2K: advice needed

Hi guys,

I need some advice on post-installation on W2KPro.

I've downloaded MySQL4.0 for the Win platform, my aim being to setup my computer as a stand-alone server for learning and development. I followed the instructions and the Windows post-installation instructions but I've done something wrong somewhere and I don't know what.

Firstly, I did the default manual install and I've set up WinMySQLAdmin to start as a service and it reports no server information as well as MyODBC not found.

Secondly, at the command prompt, when I try to enter commands like "c:\mysql\bin\mysqlshow -u root mysql" it tells me I can't conectg to MySQL server on localhost.

I've looked through the documentation but couldn't find the answers (maybe I didn't look in the right place). Could someone please point me in the right direction, this is really frustrating as I thought I did everything I should've done.

Advice appreciated
