where can i find the document/instruction for database upgrade?

hello

i have linux machine that runs mysql 3.23 and i want to upgrade it to 4.0.
however, i can not find any document that describes database upgrade from 3.23 to 4.0. does this mean i need to install this new version (4.0) and remove 3.23??
(and manually copy tables to newly created database)?
