Being able to change or access root password problem

I am confused about setting the password for root. I have looked for docs but everything is still not clear to me. I tried setting up root password for this account

mysql> mysqladmin -u root password 'newpassword'

then I was prompted for password:

I left blank, but &localhost was denied access.

I dont know what that password is. I thought it was blank by defualt.

So I tried setting down server app, but then I got the following.

mysql: unknown option '--console'

C:\Program Files\MySQL\bin>mysqld --console
Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: No error
041015 13:36:13 Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306
?
041015 13:36:13 Aborting

041015 13:36:13 mysqld: Shutdown Complete

I am totally confuse, can someone please help
