Dimensione tabelle e campi LONGBLOB

Utilizzo tabelle con campi LONGBLOB dove memorizzo ogni tipo di file. Avrei bisogno di sapere se mysql gestisce una compressione dei campi LONGBLOB. Infatti le tabelle con questi campi si ingrandiscono con notevole rapidità occupando diversi Giga di memoria e l'eventuale riparazione di tabelle molto grandi spesso non è così agevole. Qualcuno sa dirmi eventualmente come poter gestire tabelle di grandi dimensioni?
