ADD UNIQUE field with duplicate contents

Hi everyone,

I have a large table, and I would like to alter a field

Example:
--------
ALTER TABLE `user` ADD UNIQUE ( `email` );

So, just before, I do :
-------
SET UNIQUE_CHECKS=0;

But anyway I get an error message 'duplicate entry'.
How can I do that ?
