Runaway memory usage on GIS bazaar branch

Hi there,
I have been experimenting with the GIS branch of MySQL that gives non-MBR geometry queries: lp:~mysql/mysql-server/mysql-5.1-wl1326
It appears as though it has a tendency to run away consuming memory - it brought a Debian system with 2GB of RAM and 4GB of swap to a halt, having used up both the RAM and the swap.
Is there any way of putting a hard limit on the amount of memory MySQL will use, causing the query to fail if it hits this limit?
