How to improve performance for inserting blob value?

I like Mysql very much.But I encountered that it is very slow to insert value to one blob column in my java application. I use mysql 5 and use jdbc to do such work. It costs more than 30 seconds to insert an image file (about 200k) to a blob column. Is there any way to improve it?
