Cluster replication, sql node stops if rep master stopped

I have a cluster with 2 sql nodes. One node (SQL1) is a replication master, and there is a replication slave outside the cluster. This works fine. However if I stop msqld (using: /etc/init.d/mysql.server stop) on SQL1, the other sql node (SQL2) also stops, and then there is no access to the cluster.

I have tried defining a node id in my.cnf on SQL2, and tried having SQL2 keep a binary log as well, but still it stops any time SQL1 stops.

Is this normal? Is the soemthing I can do to make SQL2 keep running? Thanks,

Jason
