Failure to retrieve recordcount

I have an application in Excel/VBA using ADODB through the MySQL connector to a remote database. This worked a couple of years ago, and I am now returning to it and it now fails with an error when I open a recordset (successfully) and attempt to access the RecordCount - the reported ewrror is "Data Provider or other service returned an E_FAIL status"

Any advice welcome please.
