MySQL connector/j installization

Ive gone through all the listed steps of installing it into my java sdk, but it still doesnt register to my programs as being available.
ive set classpaths, and tried basically everything. Im working with Java version 1.4, and MySQL 4.0. Is there anyone who can give me a basic rundown of installization that maybe is more user friendly then whats listed?
Any help would be appreciated
