Undefined function mysql_connect()

I've been working with PHP for a few years, but mySQL is new to me. When I execute a PHP file calling for a mySQL connection, I get the error "Call to undefined function mysql_connect()". I've tried everything I could find online - nothing works. What's wrong, and, more importantly, how can I fix it?
I'm running:
- mySQL 5.1.37
- PHP 5.something
- Apache 2.2.12
- Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Server)
and I use Webmin as a system manager.
