Like Phil Ward says, WinXP is not a preferred platform, but if that's the best you can do, then the Refman
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/ chapter on Installing will show you how to install MySQL.
The Tutorial chapter can show you how to use MySQL.
I'm not sure Workbench is the right tool for MySQL 5.0. but you can install it, and see how you go.
There was a "gui tools" package back in the MySQL 5.0 era. You might find it in the archives.
