I'd look into using Percona's XtraBackup (http://www.percona.com/doc/percona-xtrabackup/).

With that, you can do a hot backup (if all of your tables are InnoDB), which should restore much quicker than a mysqldump backup would.

The XtraBackup manual has a few easy to follow guides for common backup and restore scenarios, which should cover what you are looking to do.
