error 1236 - missing file, but file still exists!

I have a slave DB which has been off for a few days, but when I go to restart it I get:
"Got fatal error 1236 from master when reading data from binary log: 'Could not find first log file name in binary log index file' "
But I have checked the binary log index file, and the first file listed DOES exist.
I have checked on the master, and the master_log_file still exists, the relay_log_file shown in 'SHOW SLAVE STATUS' exists.
what else can I do?
