Password limitations

Recently one of my friends mySQL databases was hacked, thankfully he had a backup but he asked me to write a script that would change the pass weekly or so to a random string then forward it to his email, however I could not find in the mySQL help files what passwords it allows? Like A-Z,a-z,0-9 symbols etc... or how many characters it allows, any help would be appreciated.
