OK -- I have an answer to my first question. I was using the log-warnings config option, but according to the docs, "aborted connections are not logged to the error log unless the value is greater than 1." Missed that the first time through.
As for the second question, there are some leads in the appendix A.2.10 Communication Errors and Aborted Connections I have been looking at. If anybody has had similar experiences, however, I'd love to hear how you solved them.
