Haven't had any problems connecting from Parallels.

Even though the VM is "on the same machine," it is really a separate machine. The error you are seeing is probably because the user you are trying to access the DB from only has access from local (which would be OS X only).

Allow access from remote machines (through either phpMyAdmin, MySQL Administrator, or your configuration GUI of choice), and it should work fine.
