I have been using version 5.0.2 on Windows XP and I haven't had any major problems with it. However I think there is a know bug with it (not sure what that is) and the recommendation is use 5.0.1 for the present time. What I would try is removing all MySQL installations from the machine and starting again.
But be aware that 5.x is not a full or stable release it's still in the Alpha stage. Also 5.0.1 doesn't have trigger support.
