thanks for help. Chris' answer really gave me some idea. I ran the examples with some wrong command line arguments before. I gave a user name, riekey, when i installed mysql server 4.1. So, I thought that was my ODBC user name. The I ran the example like: example1 localhost riekey mypassword.
This time, I ran it using root instead of riekey: example1 localhost root mypassword. It worked well. Many many Thanks
