Holy Snikes.. just found an answer, not sure if its the best way to do it or not... but it works.
Instead of doing "count(fieldname) as jcount"... I put "sum(1) as jcount" and it works wonderfully.
Thanks for anyone who looked, and I hope it helped someone down the road as well.
