Performance impact of the use of _ci collation instead of _bin

Hi,
we are currently using latin1_bin collation with latin1 character_set but this collation is case sensitive and we'd like to go to a case insensitive one like the default latin1_swedish_ci. But we have been told by MySQL that this change could cause a performance decrease. Can someone tell me approximately in what ratio this decrease could be ?
