Something like Server.HTMLEncode for MySQL

Migrating a perfectly good app from Access to MySQL. XML builder takes various text strings including several longtext with utf-8 characters. Using Access/ASP I could call Server.HTMLEncode on the longtext [memo] fields and the parser would work. Sadly MySQL doesn't seem to support that, and I can't find a solution.

Anyone able to help?

I've tried using convert() but it causes failure immediately, telling me it is an invalid argument. Latest version of MySQL is allegedly installed by the hosts.
