I will file a bug report.
I tried your mysql_affected_rows() suggestion and also found that for duplicates it returns 18446744073709551615 (sic), which happends to be 0x1999999999999999. This happens for all cases, not only when mysql_errno() erroneously returns 0.

And Facebook runs MySQL?
