RESOLVED
thank you for your help.
I tried changing the directory location where the mysql.socket file is created.
by default it was to write to /tmp, however, doesn't seem to work, even tho the dir is wide open.
I am now having mysql create and manage the mysql.socket file in /usr/local/mysql/data/mysql.socket
I changed this in the /etc/my.cnf in the [mysqld] and the [client] portions of the file.
