Understood. I'm going to chase my libedit theory for awhile then, which isn't a MySQL problem strictly speaking, right?

I only just now thought to check my libedit version more closely. I had already checked yum, which says I have 2.11 installed but libedit in my /usr/lib64 directory is suffixed with version 0.

If this theory actually goes anywhere useful I'll post again for David's possible benefit.
