I'm very new to this, but I'm sure that you haven't given enough information for anybody to help you.
Is your intent to install mySQL in a linux distribution within a virtualbox that you will run from windows? If so, then yes, you'll want to get your linux box set up properly, then install mysql within that linux distribution.
Think of your virtual machine as an entirely separate system from your physical machine. Once it is set up, everything you do within it is separate from your actual machine. Hope that helps a little.
