How to overcome this error ERROR 1045 (28000):

Hi all,
i am a newbie in mysql database, during installation i prefix a folder at /usr/local/mysql and a user is mysql. After installation i need to use test.sql and issue command shell>mysql root < test.sql. But the error message is :-
"ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)"
could anybody help e on how to resolve this problem
