Multimedia and other Binary file storage

Hello,

I have recently moved to MySQL database from Filemaker and Lasso databases. Being a newbie I have ran into the problem of what column type should be used for a binary data such as a bitmap (BMP) or a compressed data (JPG) and so on.

I am creating a project that will use Apache, Coldfusion MX, and MySQL for the database backend.

Do using BLOB an effective container for these data types. Any suggestions is appreciated.
