Backup and Restore mysql Dump involving <4.1 servers

hi all,
I have a database containing a table -- jörn, The server version i am using is 3.23. When I use mysqldump to backup the database.. the file is saved in ANSI.
If i try to restore this in 5.x it is throwing up syntax error near j%.... it is not recognizing the accented characters as ANSI..
My question-- what is the solution for this kinda problem?
