Unicode databse puts in an 'x' when updating empty string?

Unicode databse puts an 'x' when updating empty string?

4.1 server
database charset utf8
column type is text
updating using ADO, the column gets a value of 'x' when an empty string is put in? I am not
putting in a null string.

Any thoughts?
