Bad performance when migrating data

I moved 8gigs of data from a MS SQL 2000 to MySQL 5.0.15-nt-max using the MySQL Migration Toolkit 1.0.20 rc. Both databases are in the same machine and in the
same hard drive. The machine has a Pentium4 3Ghz and 2gigs of memory. The process took over 7 hours to complete. Is there anything I can do in the configuration of MySQL that will speed up the process? I've transfered this data from MS SQL 2000 to MS SQL 2000 within minutes in the same machine.
