We refer to it as *user*-defined partitioning in contrast to the *automatic* partitioning performed by the NDB storage engine.

Hope that clears things up.

I'll likely be making some fairly hefty revisions in the Partitioning documentation in the near future--I'll make a note to myself to see if I can't make this point clearer.
