ERROR: master.pid not created

ERROR: /tmp/edearl/mysql-4.0.21/mysql-test/var/run/master.pid was not created in 30 seconds; Aborting

This error occurred just after MySQL was installed by root on Linux 2.4.22 (Fedora).

Can anyone help?
