Well, I copied the binaries from my XP InnoDB files (ibdata1, ib_logfile0, and ib_logfile1) to Ubuntu. They are not binary compatible. I suppose the MySQL manual is incorrect. So at this stage, there seems to be no solution to my question except "It can't be done".
