Installing upgrade does not show new version

My company upgraded (or so we thought) to 4.1.4a gamma Standard on our Novell network using the link on the 4.1 downloads page. After installing and restarting doing a "select version()" query shows the version to be 4.0.18b. The zip file we downloaded was mysql-standard-4.1.4a-gamma-pc-netware-i686[1].zip. I was unable to find any file in the zip that conclusively said it contained 4.1.4a gamma, except for the mysql.info file which had "It documents MySQL up to Version 4.1.4-gamma...". Is there a possibility the zip file had the wrong version files? Is there something that needs to be done besides shutting down the MySQL server, extracting the files, and restarting the server?
