I had just answer Christopher Kennon for that similar problem
I access MySql via phpAdmin, after I try to access with user/password
defined with winmysqladmin I got the same message like you, but I can
access as root without password.
There is another thread in this forum discussing a similar problem
"no 'mysql' database in my database". This happened to me too, when
I try to access as someelse user/password another from root, I can't see
the mysql database, this problem still appears with winmysqladmin.

See how it looks when I use mysqlshow
C:\Meine Programme\MySQl\bin>mysqlshow

| Databases |
+-----------+
| test |
+-----------+


C:\Meine Programme\MySQl\bin>mysqlshow -u root
+-----------+
| Databases |
+-----------+
| mysql |
| test |
+-----------+
Could it be possible that is because I'm not logged in on windows 2000
as admin ?
