Hi
Well I installed the 5.1 binary pkg for Mac on Mac OS X 10.5.6, never complained during the install, did not generate a my.cnf file anywhere, nor did it generate a mysql.sock file in the /tmp directory.
Now I dont mind if it is something wrong with my machine, but I do expect an ERROR report, or a pointer to an install log failure somewhere
