my,cnf file does not exist on Mac OSX 10.6

Installed mysql 5.1.46 on Mac OSX 10.6 64bit Snow Leopard with WorkBench 5.2 and Preference Pane. Tests in workbench show running fine except I get this error when performing "testing host machine settings" in workbench ERROR "File/etc/my.cnf doesn't exist". I beleive I installed the "mysql 5.1.46 TAR" download and then installed the "DMG" download subsequently which may have goofed up my .cnf location directory?

I am a total novice to MYSQL and use Admin/Workbench GUI's to configure.

I am able to access the "usr" folder in OSX but do not see the "etc" folder. Also, I am able to ping the IP adress from a remaoe PC application connector.

ANY HELP WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED. - Jim
