What does Avg_row_length mean on an ARCHIVE engine table?

I have a MEMORY engine table that has fixed fields. SHOW TABLE STATUS reports Avg_row_length = 44

I also keep an ARCHIVE engine copy of the above table's rows, and SHOW TABLE STATUS of that reports Avg_row_length = 4140 (yes just over four thousand) yet Data_length/Rows=~11

I am very happy with the compression of about 75% but most puzzled by 4140.

MySQL community rhel5 edition 5.1.22

Any ideas please?
