Whereis MySQL Client Library Source?

Hi!
Hoping you good folks can help me out a bit.
I see that there are Linux downloads for just the development libraries; I'd like to extract from the source tarball, the source files required to build just these client development libraries. Someone in our shop long ago (in the 3.2 days) did just that (sans documentation), but I don't see a way, other than "brute force by trial and error" to accomplish the same thing with the 5.0 tree. If that's what I need to do, then so be it, but I was hoping that there is just a "grab this and that and put it into a new dir" way to accomplish the goal.
