It depends on how you want to measure time. If you are always thinking in a fixed number of days, it doesnt matter. If you want to be able to relate your period to a calendar month, the second solution would be easier to manage.
I'd probably take the second method because it would allow both (fixed number of days, calendar months etc) without much hassle
