table names in clause FROM of a subquery

I report that if you use column names of a table A in clause select and where of a SUBQUERY you can omit A in clause FROM of the subquery if A appears in from of the main query. This doesn't work if you use clause GROUP BY on columns of A.Is this standard for SQL? How SQL manages this situation from an operational point of view?
