As a follow-up, and I'm not sure this is related, but I did delete a Foreign Key on this table the day before the table disappeared. I found a 2013 reference to a bug in 5.5 that caused tables to disappear when a Foreign Key is set to 'O' (using InnoDB) ... I'm now wondering.
